MSSQL 2000 - cant connect to DB from remote computer

Please bare with me as I do not have much knowledge in this area with MSSQL.

I have installed MSSQL 2000 Developer and I have setup a database which I am able to connect to and work fine with from the actual server MSSQL is installed on.

The problem comes in when i try to connect to that same database from a different remote server. It will not connect to the DB from this remote server but I know all the connection information is correct so its something on the MSSQL DB server causing this and not on this remote server.

Someone I know has had this problem and has fixed it but they wont tell me how. All I know is they said something about manually opening the ports on the MSSQL server and he also said when you set it to dynamicly determine the port that MSSQL is listening on it errored out. however if you set it staticly to 1433 it worked fine.

Ive also installed SP4 in attempt to fix this but no luck with that either. And I can also get the same exact remote server to connect to completely different DB server without issues.

If anyone can please help walk me through this I would be greatly appreciate and I am also willing to pay some money if it will make my life easier. Can "Developer Version" be connected from a remote client?|||While these (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175043.aspx) directions are specifically for SQL 2005, I'm pretty sure that they'll work for SQL-2000 too.

-PatP|||Ronin- Yes it can be done.

Pat- The firewall is completely disabled. It says Windows Firewall and ICS(internet connection sharing) is disabled when I try to go to the firewall settings so I dont think thats the problem unless I have to enable it and then do this but that doesnt make much sense.|||can anyone help?|||Which SQL network libraries did you select?

MSRS + Fit to Page

Hi,

I need to be able to fit a report onto one page of Landscape A4. I can set the page orientation to Landscape, but I cant find anyway of setting it to print on one page.

If not, is there a way to have a 'Fit to' option where you specify the number of pages wide and the no. of pages long?

Can anyone help?

CheersWhether a report fits onto a single page is dictated by whether the contents exceed the page width and page height minus margins. There is not 'fit to page' option but it is something we would like to have in a future release.|||

Hi

I, too, am running into this same problem. Has anything new been done to provide a 'fit to page' option? Or has anyone written code to get around this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

|||Fit to Page would be great. Is this on SP2 or scheduled for development some time?

msmdredir.ini can't open of not a disk file.

Hi all,

I am having one problem about the processing cube in SQL 2005 AS.
when cube runs i get this error in log file:

File system error: Error opening file; \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\ASConfig\msmdredir.ini is not a disk file or file is not accessible.

How can i solve this!!

thanks

Does any one have experienced it before with SSAS! how can i resolve lock issues on this file!!

thanks

This file contains the port numbers used by the SSAS instances on the server. I've never heard of a "locking" issue with it so I'll make a couple general suggestions.

First, try cycling (bouncing) the server to see if that clears the issue. If that doesn't work, try temporarily disabling the SQL Browser service. If this second action clears the problem, I wouldn't recommend leaving that service disabled, but at least you'll have a starting point for tech support.

Yes, it's real... I've logged it with PSS and have had it now confirmed as a bug introduced in SP2.

While it revolves around named instances, scheduling the processing to happen at different times per instance may not work for you.

From the testing I did prior to logging the call, I found two issues that were introduced with SP2. Together they make the issue very very painful.

1) When you process a database when SP2 is installed, the AS Instance requires Read/write access to the msdmredir.ini file. Prior to SP2 it didn't. I could even make the file read-only, and the processing would take place successfully.

2) the ini file gets updated approximately every 30 sec PER AS INSTANCE INSTALLED. You can see this by checking the timestamp of the file. So if there are two named instances running, it will update 4 times a min (but not every 15 sec, as the instances have different start times etc). Stopping one or more of the instances will reduce the frequency of the update.

Note that the behaviour described in point 2 above did not start straight away, but only after the first time I tried to synchronise a database from one instance to the next. My thought was that I could do all the processing in one instance, then sync it out to the other instances, and avoid the locking issue. But once the behaviour starts, it doesn't go away thereafter.

So, it means that even if you're only processing from one instance, this issue may get you!! If you're lucky and your ini file isn't continuously updating, scheduling each instance to a different time may work.

Andrew

Your windows help will tell you how to run msinfo32 and the parameters e.g.
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"
/report C:\temp\report.txt /categories +systemsummary
It does seem to want to start outlook when I run it, so that could be a
problem. Once you have created the file you can then load it into a table.

msg 1936, can't find in documentation

Hi,
One of our team has come across the following message, I can't find
reference
to it anywhere, any suggestions?:
"Server: Msg 1936, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot index the view 'Albert_Heijn_LOAD.dbo.v_Supplier'. It contains one or
more disallowed constructs."Seems like you try to create an index on a view, where the view contain some construct which is
disallowed, quite simply.

reference to it in BOL or on the web.
Turns out that the user was trying to use a computed column, which was
non-deterministic.
