Hi,
I have a problem starting my MSDTC.
I have enable network DTC access (following the instructions in MS KB
817064) on two of my servers before I clustered them. The DTC services run
well. After that, I configured my servers in cluster Node A and B
(Active/Passive). The DTC immediately failed to start. I carried on and
configured my MSDTC resources (following the instructions in MS KB 301600) on
Node A. The other resources like IP, Physical disk, Network name able to
bring online except for DTC.
What is happening? I have tried my best to follow all instructions as
closely as possible. I seems to be struck. Still have to install SQL 2005
but now spend days to resolve the MSDTC issue. Please kindly help me!

MSDTC Required?
I am preparing for the installation of SQL Server 2005 Standard on a
two-node cluster. The SQL Server books Online" topic named "Before
Installing Failover Clustering" indicates that you must install MSDTC if you
are installing the Database Engine and SSIS, Notification Services or
Workstations components. I am not planning on installing SSIS or
Notification Services but would like to install the Workstations components
(specifically SSMS and the other tools) on the clustered nodes.
Is it really necessary to install MSDTC in the cluster if I don't plan on
doing distributed transactions? I want to keep the installation as simple
as possible and don't see why I need to install MSDTC in the cluster with
the Workstation components.
Any help would be appreciated.

SQL works a lot better with MSDTC. You can go ahead and install it in the
cluster group if you do not have a lot of distributed transactions.

I always install it as a matter of procedure but if it's not necessary, how
does it help?

configure the MS DTC cluster resource to use the same cluster resource group
as the SQL Server installation.
Otherwise, follow the instructions to set up a dedicated cluster resource
group for MS DTC, which will require a dedicated shared cluster disk, IP
address, and Network Name resources.
Do not run MS DTC as a resource in the Quorum cluster resource group.

MSDTC Group
I have the MSDTC group with resources in a SQL Server cluster.
The MSDTC group and resources are all online from Cluster Administrator. If
check SQL Server Support Service it show the service as stopped. The Server
services shows the MSDTC to off.
Please help me with these results.
1. Are you looking in the active or passive node? Which user are you logged
on as in enterprise manager , is it an admin account?
2. Check the APP and SYS logs for any MSDTC errors

Microsoft software to better protect against viruses and security

The MSDTC group and resources are all online from Cluster Administrator. If
check SQL Server Support Service it show the service as stopped. The Server
services shows the MSDTC to off.
Please help me with these results.
1. Are you looking in the active or passive node? Which user are you logged
on as in enterprise manager , is it an admin account?
2. Check the APP and SYS logs for any MSDTC errors

MSDTC & W2K3 & SQL 2000 issue
I have MSDTC installed in the Cluster group (no other disks available). It fails over fine, comes online on either node, no problem. My DBA alerted me, that she cannot start Distributed Transaction Coordinator on the node that is NOT in control of the MSD
TC resource using SQL Server Enterprise Manager. This is on W2K3. This cluster will be replacing a W2K/SQL2K cluster. I configured the W2K3 cluster, the same as the W2K cluster, yet she (the DBA) CAN start MSDTC on either/both nodes of the W2K cluster. W
hy won't DTC start on the other node in Ent Mgr? The DBA says that this is necessary for something to function correctly, so I have to fix it? Any ideas/help would be appreciated.
A clustered instance of SQL server uses a cluster-wide MSDTC instance
instead of a local MSDTC instance on each host node. As such, the cluster
admin tool becomes the correct tool for managing MSDTC, not SQL Enterprise
Mangler. So, the behavior your DBA noted is correct for a cluster, but
since MSDTC is running the application will function correctly.

|||It is a good idea to place MSDTC in its own resource group and another thing
I will check is that the Network access for DTC is enabled. YOu can look for
this in control panel/add remove programs/add remove components/Application
Server.
