MSSearch.exe error window: "Tracer"
Every so often (approx. once a week), the full-text indexing will fail on
one of our database tables. We are unsure why, but have noticed some rather
bizarre behavior associated with this failure. (Normally, we restart the
MSSearch service and everything works again.)
Just today, the client called to tell us it didn't work. So, using
LogMeIn.com, I controlled their server computer to see what was going on.
Immediately I noticed a messagebox window with a title of "Tracer" and text
of "Release products should NOT call tracer!". The only button was "OK".
I didn't know for sure where this message was coming from, so I used
SysInternals' Process Explorer to list the processes and their window titles.
Lo and behold, MSSearch.exe was the process tied to "Tracer".
Obviously, this is a SQL Server bug, but I've not found reference to it in
any online searches. Has anyone seen this? Is it fixable by upgrading to
SP4 (this client is still using NT4, though).
Thanks for any information.
John,
Basic troubleshooting of SQL Server 2000 and MSSearch is somewhat of a black
art (as I can attest to), but the first place you should look for
information on what is causing the full-text indexing failure is the
server's Application event log as this is the only place where errors,
warning and information events are recorded for the MSSearch service. Look
for all related "Microsoft Search" or MssCi source events (errors, warning
and information) near the time of the failure. This will be the best source
of info as to what is causing the problem.
While I've never have used LogMeIn.com, I have known Microsoft to attach
debuggers to both SQL Server and the MSSearch.exe to identify bugs. If you
believe this to be a bug, then I'd highly recommend that you open a support
case with Microsoft PSS SQL Server support and get this resolved for your
client.

John

|||We have the same thing happening sparodically at one of clients as well, The Tracer message pops up, the fulltext search quits working, if we restart mssearch it starts working again.
Only real difference I see, is that our client is running Small Bussiness Server, (Windows 2000, SP4) and I was blaming it on that, since they have all kinds of strange limitations they try to put in it.
I am switching it to update at 4AM each day instead of the continuas background update, and see if that makes a difference.
It only causes trouble when indexing 1 of the two tables we are indexing. The table has 550,000 items and a 5303 MB catalog, with a key count 6 million.

MSSearch without SQL Server
However, we would rather not store the entire raw text in the SQL
Server. So is there a way to use the MSSearch service outside the
context of SQL Server? In other words, to populate MSSearch directly
with free-text, let it build its index and query either MSSearch
directly or indirectly via SQL Server but without actually storing the
free-text in SQL Server.
Hope someone can help me out here.
Thanks in advance
Thomas
Not really. What you could do is create a linked server to Index
Server/Indexing Services and then query it this way.
Here is how to add a linked server to the system catalog Indexing Services
uses.
sp_AddLinkedserver any_name, 'Indexing Service', 'MSIDXS', 'your catalog
name'
and then query like this
create procedure test_index @.strsearch varchar(20) as
declare @.strSQL varchar(244)
select @.strSQL='select FileName, path, vpath from scope() where contains ('
select @.strSQL=@.strSQL +char(39)+ char(39)+ @.strsearch
+char(39)+char(39)+')'
select @.strSQL='select * from openquery(any_name,'+ char(39)+
@.strSQL+char(39) +')' exec (@.strSQL)
The performance offered is not the best, so you might want your client to
access the Indexing Services query objects directly, ixsso offers better
performance than msidxs and ado.

|||Thomas,
Where does most of your "raw text" reside today? In SQL Server 2000 table(s)
or in files on the server's hard disk?
If most of the raw table is on the server's local disk drive, you may want
to consider one of the many desktop search tools, such as those listed at
http://spaces.msn.com/members/jtkane/Blog/cns!1pWDBCiDX1uvH5ATJmNCVLPQ!249.entry
Specifically, dtSearch can index and search data in SQL Server as well as
files on the disk.

Be careful increasing the history retention period if performance is a
concern. What we have done is pushed all the data you need to a
seperate 'reporting' database and run our queries from there.
|||I've always found this to be minor. I am following up with you offline Greg.

Without seeing the entire query, it's difficult to see what might be
wrong, but try rewrite the query to use JOIN syntax throughout:
SELECT ...
FROM trades a
JOIN gems_product_groups b ON ...
JOIN portfolio_nav_mapping c ON ...
JOIN products d ON ...
JOIN limit_types e ON ...
LEFT JOIN gems_prod_trade_mod f on d.product_id = ...

joining to be adjacent in the list, at least when mixed with other
joins written the way you have them. In your case you have limit_types
between products and the left join. If you simply swap the positions of
products and limit_types then it should work. e.g:
select ...
from trades a,
gems_product_groups b,
portfolio_nav_mapping c,
limit_types e,
products d
left outer join gems_prod_trade_mod f on d.product_id =

It worked on my workstation (SQL Server 2000 SP3)
BTW why would you want to use an 'old' style and not OUTER JOIN?

I changed the order of the tables to
gems_product_groups b,
portfolio_nav_mapping c,
limit_types e,
products d
left outer join gems_prod_trade_mod f on d.product_id =
f.product_ID
and it works. In the previous incarnation I tried every type of join
and got the same error.

MSDTC Service
I could not find MSDTC service from Control Panel --> Services for SQL
Server 2000 on Win 2000 and Win 2003. There are only MSSQLSERVER and
SQLSERVERAGENT 2 services. I need to change the startup account password. I
have changed password for SQL Server and SQL Server Agent account via SEM.
But there is not place to change password for MSDTC startup from SEM. MSDTC
is in Control Pannel -->Services for SQL 7.0. How can I find it for SQL 2000
on Win 2000 and Win 2003?
Thanks,
Julia
The name of the service is 'Distributed Transaction Coordinator". There is
only one instance per computer and does not appear in EM. Like all
services, it can be managed using the Services MMC.
The service runs under NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService by default. This is a
minimally privileged account so one usually doesn't need to change it.
Hope this helps.

msdtc config / sql server 2k cluster(sp4) / W2k3 sp1
server db. Right now the db is running on a W2k server (sp4)
(non-clustered). I've copied the dbs to the clustered environment that we
are migrating all of our databases to, and now the com components do not
connect. I've installed the Network DTC components and have configured the
MSDTC resource via Cluster Adminstrator and can see that the service starts
on each server in the node as I fail the cluster group between those nodes.
I've read and adhered to doc 301600 and it's sub article of 817064
(pre-reqs). Not sure what else may be wrong or that I need to validate. The
application returns the following error when the user tries to login via the
web portal: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction
coordinator. The application runs on a W2k (sp4) server. Any guidance would
be greatly appreciated.
It isn't anything to do with the cluster. This would happen on a stand-alone
system anyway.

MSDN Version of SQLServer 2000 and SQLServer 2005
From a SQLServer installation (both 2000 & 2005), is there a way to find out
if the installation is a MSDN installation. Select @.@.Version does not seem to
indicate anything to that effect.
The previous DBA did a SQLServer installation (2000 & 2005) and I could not
find the 32-bit version of the media. That leads me to believe that he might
have installed it from a MSDN CD/DVD.
Thanks,
rgnNo. You can only tell what edition you have installed.
