MSSQL 2000 connection problem, please help

Explanation:
After attaching MSSQL 2000 SP3 server into domain,
Local Admin and SA cannot login into MSSQL
EM and QA are not working.
"Change the MSSQLServer service account to be a domain account. Make this
domain account a member of the
Local Administrators group on the machine." - Tried, but no chance.
Hi
If SA can't login and you have not changed the password, it means that SQL
Server is not running. Check in control panel > services and also check the
NT event log to see what the failures are.

When you have another application that can use the SQL server, have you
then tried to connect to the instance from EM using the account this
application is using? You could also check which account you have
registered in EM for connecting to the instance. Have you tried to to
create a new SQL server registration in EM using Windows Authentication
(while logged on to the server with an account that is local
administrator on the server.

Unfortunatly this user information is not avalible for me. This
application is the closed box.

Yes, I did but same result.

MSP_CUBE tables not updating with current data

Hi there,

I have recently been put into a role working with Project Server Web Access and OLAP cubes. Am experiencing trouble displaying current data in the Portfolio Analyzer in Web Access.

After adding and deleting data, inlcuding projects and resources, the updates are not reflecting when analysing the cube data. I have successfully reprocessed the cube from the Analysis Manager but still does not show current data.

When looking at the MSP_CUBE_* tables in SQL Manager, these tables directly reflect the data displayed in the cube. ie. The non-current data.

Is there a specific way to update these tables with the current data from the ProjectServer tables ?

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Updating this source data is really a Project Server issue rather than an Analysis Services one. There might be some people here that use both, but you would be better off asking in a Project/ProjectServer focused forum or newsgroup.sql

msmdpump, how does it work?

I am using AS2000, i have msmdpump setup properly and its working fine, but when i look at the code of msolap.asp i was confused as to how is the mdx query passed to msmdpump.dll as i couldn't see any parameters being passed to msmdpump, i could just find

//no parameter passed here

pump.ReadData

So how does msmdpump know as to which mdx query it has to process?. I badly need to find out which mdx query is the msmdpump processing ,or which dimensions it is querying.

I took a dump of the data being posted to the msolap.asp page from an excel client by writing an isapi filter and writing the data on the SF_NOTIFY_READ_RAW_DATA event, here it is

I couldn't make anything out of it though

I also tried referencing msmdpump.dll to a .net project and i could see functions like

OnStartPage(object piUnk) .

looked to me as if piUnk is a reference to some asp com object interface, but don't know for sure.

Any help is appreceiated

In AS2000, the MDX query is not passed from the client to the server. Client code, i.e. msolap80.dll does all the parsing etc. The communication with server happens on much lower level.|||

Thanks for the reply , so is there anyway to know which mdx query is being passed to the as2000 server to process, or if that's not possible, then is it possible to know which dimension is the client trying to access.

Actually the problem is that we have as2000 server in domain A ,the webserver is in domain B and the users are in domain C.

Now B trusts C, A trusts B. We want to give users in C direct permission to the cubes so we have setup msmdpump. But the problem is that we want the users in C to have access to only a particular value of a dimension ,say dimRestricted, and since A doesn't know the users in C, we can't directly add users in C to the AS2000 client roles. So we have created users in B and have added them to the roles in AS2000 server, one for each value of dimRestricted(the number of entries in dimRestricted is constant and is less then 10).When a client from C tries to access the cubes we check whether he has access to the cube and depending on the dimension of dimRestricted which he is trying to access we impersonate the corresponding user in domain B.

But for that to happen we need to find out the value of dimRestricted dimension the client is trying to access.

Any clues or hints are well appreciated.

|||I suggest that you create a mapping between users in domain C and users in domain B. This way, when user from C is authenticated - you will be able to map him to user in domain B. The mapping will work purely on user per user basis, and won't need to know anything about cubes or dimensions.|||

Thanks for the quick reply,

That's pretty much what we are doing, so what we have is that we have AD groups in C each of which is supposed to have access to a particular value of dimension dimRestricted and a corresponding user in Domain B to which we give access to that value of dimRestricted dimension.

So suppose we have AD group named C1 in C , which is supposed to have access to value "panasonic" in dimension dimRestricted, so there is a corresponding user B1

in B which only has access to panasonic value in dimRestricted.

Similarly we have AD group named C2 in C , which is supposed to have access to value "samsong" in dimension dimRestricted, so there is a corresponding user B2 in B which only has access to samsong value in dimRestricted.

But now there can be a special user who might be both in C1 and C2, the code just checks that if user belongs to C1 then impersonate to B1 ,if C2 then B2. Now if he requests to see Measures for dimension "panasonic" , he would be impersonated to B1 and everything would be fine, but what if he tries to see for "samsong", our code does't knows which dimension he is trying to access and would again impersonate to B1 and he would not get any data whereas he should.

So we need to know which value of dimRestricted he is trying to access.

Thanks for the help.

|||My suggestion was that you have true one-to-one mapping between users in C and in B. If you have user C3 which should belong to two different roles, you need to create corresponding user B3, who will belong to these two roles, and then when you detect C3, you impersonate B3. I.e. you map user to user, not group to user. There is a management overhead with this solution, but this is the only way you can get it working with AS2000.|||

Thanks for the reply,

Yes that's what we are planning to do, and its specifically for this huge number of users that we might have to create in domain B(for which we may not even get permission) that i was looking for finding some way out of finding the dimension that the client is accessing .

Thanks anyways!.

Msgbox/Breakpoints not working in a script component.

In the code behind the Script Transformation component, neither the MsgBox nor any of the breakpoints seem to work. Am I missing to do something in order for these to get executed?

Thanks.

No, you're right. Breakpoints and msgboxes do not work in script components.

Best way is to throw information events that appear in the output window.

I can't remember the syntax offhand but if you type "Me." intellisense will guide you.

Thinking about it I think its "Me.FireInformation(...)"

MSFT Please Help

Hi,

I am working on localizing SSRS reports and wanted to store the text for the labels in the database for different languages. The Language id would be passed by the user as a parameter. Based on this Language ID, the required data for the labels would be fetched and stored in a dataset in the custom code. This dataset would then be searched for relevant LabelIDs and the label caption in the particular language would be returned. The dataset would be a shared variable so it would get initialized the first time. For initializing the dataset I would need the datasource information, which would either be stored in the Shared Data source or embedded in the Report.

Can I refer to the shared data source being used by the current report in the Custom Code Window ? Or can I retrieve the data source information embedded in the report and use it in the Custom Code? If so, how ?

Thanks In Advance.

Ashish

Hi Guys,

Does any one know as to how can we access the data source connection information from Custom Code ?

I need that information to populate a custom dataset created in the Custom Code.

Please help.

TIA.

Ashish

MSDTC stopped working on primary node

Looking for some advice on an issued that just popped up. Not sure if
this was the cause but after applying MS04-011 and 012 MSDTC will not
run on the primary Node. Main application error message is:
"MS DTC was unable to start because the installation of was not
configured to run on a cluster. Please run comclust.exe and restart
MS DTC. Error Specifics: .\msdtc.cpp:825, CmdLine:
C:\WINNT\System32\msdtc.exe, Pid: 2160"
Just curious if anyone has run comclust again after MSDTC has been
setup and if this will cause any issues. I think that it shouldn't
but it doesn't hurt to check.
Thanks,
Derek
Did you run comclust on both nodes of the cluster?
If so you should be able to run comclust -r on the primary node while the
resource is on the secondary node. After this you can run comclust on this
node. This should resolve the problem.

comclust -r a try tonight.

MSDTC on server xx is unavailable

Hi:
We have 2 sql server(both sql2000) and using update/insert
triggers to replicate between the 2 servers. the
replication has been working and now We got this error
when doing an update:
ole/db provider returned message, new transaction cannot
enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. the
operation could not be performed because the oledb
provider 'sqloledb' was unable to begin a distributed
transaction.
So I restarted msdtc service on both sql servers, now when
running an update, I got msdtc on server
destinationservernm is unavailable, but both dtc services
are started. Any thoughts? thanks.Which OS version?

MSDTC fails on Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4

I have a VB6 application that uses MTS in a COM+ package for
transaction based processing over MSDTC. This application was working
fine when run from the SQL Server machine on Windows 2000 Advanced
Server until the latest security updates were installed. Now the
application fails to connect to SQL Server when the call is made inside
a transaction context within MTS/COM+
I have verified that MSDTC is started
The DTCTester tool runs successfully
RPC port 135 is open
This application runs fine on a Windows 2000 Server machine with SP4.
What is different about Windows 2000 Advanced Server such that it no
longer works after applying security updates (SP4)'İs your SQL server and application server are in same domain, do you have
firewall etc between SQL Server and appl. server?
We had problems after we install Windows 2003 SP1 with MSDTC, we select No
Authantication Required and the problem is gone. Maybe because of you have
applied security patches you are having the same problem.
Check out:

Hope this helps.

DTCPing can be used to check out MSDTC connectivity issues

DTCPing can be used to check out MSDTC connectivity issues
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918331 such as firewall problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306843 There is also the DTCTester tool
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293799
John|||Set up linked server. Then do this:
BEGIN DISTRIBUTED TRAN
update linkedserver.pubs.dbo.employee
set lname = 'Accorti'
where emp_id = 'PMA42628M'
COMMIT TRAN
Repeat in the other direction too.
If you don't have pubs, install it from script from MS, or use some other
suitable db you have.
